If you have been taking or have been started on a medication called a Bisphosphonate.

Bisphosphonates include the following medication names:

  • Alendronic Acid
  • Risendronate
  • Ibandronic Acid
  • Pamidronate Disodium
  • Risedronate Sodium
  • Sodium Clodronate

Note: Your Pharmacist can help you identify which medication this is.

The clinician who prescribed you with this medication or your pharmacist will have informed you of many of the recognised side effects and these are included in the patient information leaflet that comes with your medication.

One of the exceptionally rare sided effects from taking this medication is a condition called “Osteonecrosis of the jaw” which causes the jaw to weaken.
This condition usually only effects those who take the medication via infusion rather than by mouth, but it can present as extreme pain in the jawbone, but not always, this usually goes away after you stop taking your medication.

We wanted to remind you of the importance of informing your dentist that you are taking a Bisphosphonate and we recommend that you have regular dental check-ups while taking this medication.

This is purely for information and there is no need to see your GP, unless you have any concerns regarding this medication.
